Associated Press Firefighters from Santa Barbara County work to light a backfire to control the advance of flames rugged terrain about 15 miles east of Santa Margarita, Friday. The fire, to have started by a car fire in a campground, has burned 17 500 reported acres according to officials.

Crews fight fire with fire in Oregon and California BY JEFF BARNARD ASSOCIATED PRESS WARM SPRINGS, Ore. Firefighters burned several hunacres of dry rangeland in eastern Oregon to slow the growth of a fire, one of several wind-swept blazes burning in nine Western states Friday. "We've fought fire with fire and we're pretty successful today," said Gary Meese, a division supervisor battling the fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. "This little piece is a couple of hundred acres, but that's peanuts on this fire." The threat to the small town of Warm Springs eased as residents of about 70 houses were allowed to return home and a convoy of 65 cars left the Kah-Nee-Ta resort where they had been stranded in recent days. The main route into the resort was reopened early Friday.

The fire has destroyed 11 homes. Firefighters throughout Oregon braced for a dry cold front with strong winds forecast to move through Friday. State police evacuated 92 people, mostly campers, from an area in north-central Oregon late Thurswhen they saw the glow of a fire about miles away, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Ron DeHart said. "They went in last night as a precautionary measure because it's a one-lane dirt road from Maupin that would be a mess if the fire came down the ridge west of the river," DeHart said.

"It did not." More than half the 10,000 firefighters working in seven Western states were assigned to Oregon. President Clinton vacationing with his family in Wyoming ordered Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman to send any reinforcements needed. About 700 new fires were reported in Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Washington and Wyoming mostly small fires sparked by lightning, the National Interagency "Fire Center said. Fires also burned in Nevada and Colorado. "We got lot of lightning all over the West," said agency spokeswoman Rose Davis said.

"It's a typical summer." Nearly 355,000 acres had burned across the West since Aug. 8, pushing the total to 3.95 million acres for 1996, she said. Last year, wildfires burned 1.28 million acres in the West. Timber harvest practices and fire suppression efforts that have changed the landscape over the years are to blame for much of the damage, said Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, who surveyed the damage in Warm Springs Thursday.

"Quite frankly, we haven't followed environmentally sound practices," he said. No serious injuries have been reported in the wildfires. Kevorkian-aided led suicide victim's husband earlier cited for abuse BY KELLY L. ANDERSON ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT A nurse suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome who committed suicide with Dr.

Jack Kevorkian's help complained to police about three weeks ago that her husband had manhandled her and that she was afraid of him. Judith Curren spoke with officers at the couple's stately colonial home in Pembroke, as they arrested Dr. Franklin Curren on a charge of domestic assault and battery, Plymouth County District Attorney Michael Sullivan said Friday. Curren, 57, a staff psychiatrist at Pembroke Psychiatric Hospital, was at his wife's side, along with Kevorkian and another psychiatrist, when she committed suicide Thursday. A message left Friday evening with Kevorian's attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, was not immediately returned.

Earlier, Fieger said Mrs. Curren, 42, had suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome that was destroying her body like AIDS. "This is not the virus that causes AIDS, but it produced exactly the same type of immune deficiency that AIDS produced," Fieger said. "In this particular case, chronic fatigue syndrome may be caused by a virus, it may be caused by a bacteria, they don't know," he said. "But in a certain small percentage of cases, it is progressive, it is fatal, inevitably, because she was suffering from destruction of systems that could never regenerate." But a specialist disputed the assertion the disease is progressive and said people don't generally die of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Charles Lapp, a North Carolina internist, said that while the pain can be nearly unbearable, medicine helps. "This is not an illness that State moves to help troubled Owensboro hotel fend off closing ASSOCIATED PRESS OWENSBORO, Ky. The state has granted an indefinite extension of the liquor license at the financially troubled Ramada Resort Conference Center. About 50 of the 400 employees have been laid off and most workers are losing their company-paid health insurance. Thursday was supposed to be the deadline for the hotel to pay more than $1 million in delinquent state taxes or lose its state license to sell alcoholic beverages.

Losing the license would mean losing conventions. And that probably would have meant closing down the hotel, General Manager Ray Cremata said. "We have renewed the license until they get something worked out," said Greg Ginter, Kentucky's Alcohol Beverage Control commissioner. "It was my decision, along with Gov. (Paul) Patton," Ginter said.

"It is not generally considered to be a progressive illness, nor is it considered to be a fatal Mrs. Curren, a registered nurse and mother of two daughters, ages 9 and 7, was the 35th person to commit suicide with Kevorkian's help. The Oakland County Medical a Examiner's office said the autopsy were not immediately say where or how Mrs.

Curren is available, and Fieger would not died. The Currens have an unlisted telephone number. Oakland County Prosecutor Richard Thompson, who lost his reelection bid after twice failing to convict Kevorkian on assisted suicide charges, said Friday that his office was looking into the couple's background. "I can just tell you that we are aware of that report and our office has been in touch with prosecutors in Massachusetts," Thompson said. Prosecutors and police in Massachusetts were interviewing people about the couple's relationship and looking into whether Mrs.

Curren was taking antidepressants a possible indication that she was not fully competent to decide on suicide. However, Sullivan added, "There's no evidence at this point in time that there's any wrongdoing" in her death. Mrs. Curren had told police that she was afraid of her husband and that he had yanked the phone away from her and dismantled it, then grabbed her arm and hair and pulled her out of bed, court records said. Curren acknowledged that they had been arguing, but said his ridden wife suffered from depres, sion and an obsessive disorder and was refusing to take her antidepressant medicine.

Curren was arrested, and after a hearing Aug. 6, he was released on probation provided he get counseling, the court records show. He was to return to court on Oct. 7. At the hospital where Curren worked, medical director Dr.

Michael Engel would not speculate on whether the suicide would affect Curren's job status. "We need to do some thinking about it ourselves," Engel said. According to the stack of claims now pending in Daviess Circuit Court, the former Executive Inn Rivermont owed the state Revenue Cabinet $1,054,482 for unspecified taxes, penalties, interest and lien fees, as of July 3. The state Unemployment Insurance Fund has a separate claim of $14,435, plus interest. Private vendors also have filed claims. But the biggest was the foreclosure suit filed by a group of banks that the hotel owes $9.5 million.

A motion asking the court to put the hotel into receivership is scheduled to be heard Sept. 3. Meanwhile, a task force of community leaders is continuing to explore options that might put the hotel back on its feet financially, or turn the hotel and convention center into a combined public-private partnership.
